He says that the company will invest Rs 300 crore in its Akurdi plant in Pune and electric scooters will be manufacture in this facility. At the same time, the e-auto rickshaw will be manufacture at the Aurangabad plant.
He said, “We are gearing up to make a major part of the portfolio electric, so we are investing 300 crores in Akurdi. We are expect to start rolling out the first electric scooter by June.”
Earlier, at the launch of Pulsar 250s in October last year, the company’s Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj had said that new-age stand-alone electric 2-wheeler makers need to harness the power of good 2-wheeler companies like Bajaj Auto, TVS Motors and Royal Enfield. Should not be take lightly.
Comparing the business models of start-up firms and old companies, Bajaj then said that their business model is a cash-burn model. He said, “Our business is a cash flow model. We have to make sure we make money. That’s why we work very differently.”
Bajaj Auto also has its R&D centre at Akurdi facility and hence would be a good location to manufacture electric scooters. Sharma said the company would apply for an e-auto rickshaw in a month or two.
Apart from this, the company is exploring options to manufacture high-performance.
EV motorcycles in a joint venture with sports bike maker Austria’s KTM AG. The company is also partnering with Triumph Motorcycles of the UK to make low-cost medium capacity bikes for the Indian market. The company also plans to foray into new markets such as Europe and Brazil in the next 12-18 months.
